St. Paul Surigao University Hospital

The St. Paul Surigao University Hospital (SPSUH) is a brainchild of Sr. Marie Rosanne Mallillin, SPC, the President of St. Paul University Surigao. Many factors contributed to the conception of the idea of creating the SPSUH in Surigao, from the absence of a competitive health care facility in Surigao to the low performance of the Nursing students from the University. It was on the 4th of December in 2011, during the board of trustees meeting when the birth of SPSUH finally took place when Sr. Rosanne and Mr. Rufino Mijares were designated to head the project.

On December 4, 2011, the SPSUH finally broke ground. Sisters with their call to mission then arrived on the 25th of August 2016, with Sr. Norma Patricia Manzano, SPC as Hospital Administrator and Sr. Melanie Guzman, SPC as the Nursing Service Director. With them were Sr. Rutchel Magallanes, SPC, Sr. Rachelle Way-yas, SPC, and Sr. Florence De La Calzada, SPC. The Sisters with their expertise in Hospital Management faced the challenges in making significant milestones in the development of SPSUH. 

To name a few, on September 3, 2016, the blessing of the ground floor which includes the Emergency Room, Outpatient Department, and other Ancillary Services took place followed by the grand blessing 4 months later on January 28, 2017. 

However, an unfortunate event happened on February 10, 2017 when a magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck the city affecting the edifice of the hospital and cancelling the scheduled inspection of the Department of Health on the very same month. 

On February 16, Secretary of the Department of Health Dr. Paulyn Jean B. Ubial requested the Hospital to apply and open temporarily as a Birthing Facility while the re-construction of the affected area was ongoing. And on February 20, 2017 after complying all the DOH and PhilHealth requirements, the SPSUH Birthing Facility was licensed to operate. The DOH had its inspection on April 18, 2017 for the Hospital licensing and after the thorough inspection the St. Paul Surigao University Hospital was licensed as a Level 2 Hospital with an authorized bed capacity of 60.

The SPSUH opened on May 8, 2017 and has since catered to the needs of the Surigaonons adhering to its vision of a Christ-centered, dynamic and socially responsible global health care institution with the tag line “We Care…With a Difference.”
